Four Foods To Add To Your Diet If You Suffer From Hypothyroidism

If you have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, the hormone replacement medications that your doctor prescribes will go a long way towards keeping your symptoms at bay. However, there are other things you can do to bolster your thyroid function and make yourself feel better, including adding the following foods to your diet:

Oily Fish

Oily fish such as salmon and tuna is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to help patients with hypothyroidism fight symptoms like impaired immune function and systemic inflammation. Try eating fish for lunch or dinner a few days per week. It's easy to season a fish fillet with your favorite spices, and then broil it for 3 - 4 minutes per side. You can cook several fish fillets at the same time, and then keep them in the fridge to reheat throughout the week.

Brown Rice

Whole grains are great for people with impaired thyroid function, since they are high in the B vitamins and iron that your thyroid needs for proper function. Brown rice is one of the easiest whole grains to find and prepare. Just pour one cup of brown rice into a pan, add two and a half cups of water, cover the pan with a lid, and let the mixture simmer for about 40 minutes or until all of the liquid has been soaked up. Eat your brown rice as a side dish with a little barbecue sauce or soy sauce for flavoring, or put it into a burrito for a filling and healthy meal.


Berries are high in antioxidants like vitamins C and E, which will help bolster your immune system so you don't end up sick as often. Try pouring a few blueberries into your oatmeal (another great whole grain to try), or blending up strawberries with some bananas and orange juice to make a smoothie.


Nori is the seaweed that sushi chefs use. It is very high in iodine, which is a precursor to thyroid hormones. Look for nori in a health food store, and use sheets of it to make your own sushi rolls at home. No, you do not need to include raw fish. You can make delicious sushi-style snacks by rolling up some rice, sliced cucumber, imitation crab and cream cheese. Dip the rolls in soy sauce, and enjoy.
